Early language development
The familial language is the language parents speak with their children. The better children speak their familial language (first language), the easier they will find it to learn the local language later. This is why you should take time to speak your language with your child.
Chat to your children while you are doing the housework. Listen to what they say and answer them when they talk to you. Take them outdoors – to the playground, to the forest or the lake. Talk to them about what you can see and help to increase their vocabulary. Look at picture books with them and tell them stories.
At the playground or in a playgroup or kindergarten, your child has an opportunity to mix with Swiss children. You should praise them when they learn words in the new language because it takes courage to speak a different language and learn new words.
My child is learning to speak two or more languages as they grow up. Where can I find information on how to help them?
The brochure "Talk to me and listen to me!" provides tips and information on how parents can help their child to learn how to speak their first language. It also explains how important it is for your child to learn the local language, so that they can make friends, for example, be happy here and get off to a good start in kindergarten and school.
Language is a communication tool. Little children try it out and learn it when they talk to other people during the day – shopping with mum, taking the bus with dad, or meeting with friends at the playgroup. The Canton of Zurich Department of Education has produced 25 short films that show how parents and carers can create a positive learning environment in which to develop language skills. The films are available in 13 languages.
Should I send my child to a playgroup?
Playgroup will support your child’s development and prepare him or her for kindergarten. They will learn to socialise with other children, to play, share, look after themselves and others, to fight and make up again. It is also a good opportunity for your child to become more familiar with the local language.
Make enquiries in your municipality about local playgroups. You can also telephone the Integration Department on 081 257 26 38 or e-mail us on info@integration.gr.ch with any questions.
