Can my child also be taught the language, history and culture of our native country?
Some schools in the canton offer various courses in Heimatlicher Sprache und Kultur (Native Language and Culture). The stakeholders are consulates, embassies and cultural associations. Lessons are usually held on a free afternoon after school, or on a Saturday morning. Ask your child’s teacher about which services are available. What language skills are required for the allocation of a hardship permit?
Individual aspects of integration, as well as personal circumstances as a whole, are taken into consideration for grant of a B permit by the Amt für Migration und Zivilrecht (Department for Migration and Civil Law) Hardship Commission.
As far as linguistic integration is concerned, applicants must have the language skills to cope with daily life. The following proof of this is required:
- A recognised A2 language qualification (Telc, ÖSD, Fide, Goethe-Institut, etc.)
- A certificate from a recognised language school confirming 280 German lessons, with a minimum 80% attendance and A2 oral language skills.
In exceptional cases, people who have had education and training, but do not have a certificate from a language school, can submit verbal proof of A2 language skills in a supported application.
In the case of people with a medically certified disability (speech and/or hearing impairment, serious mental or physical disability), the requirements for day-to-day comprehension will be reviewed individually.

I want to apply for my family to immigrate from a third country. What are the language requirements for my husband/wife/child who is no longer of school age (under 18)?
You will need either an A1 language certificate (oral) or proof of registration on a language course in order to submit an application. In cases where it is only possible to register for a language course after immigration, it is possible to submit a signed undertaking that the foreign national(s) will complete a language course.
